David Hinson Welch, former Chairman, President and CEO of Stone Energy, passed away on August 14, 2018. David is survived by his wife, Cynthia Meagher Welch, his children, Ashley Welch Durlacher, Matthew David Welch, and Lindsay Welch Johnson and 10 grandchildren, August, Lily and Elsa Durlacher, Liam and Ivy Welch, and Nina, Molly, Fisher, Beckett, and Wells Johnson, and many close friends and family members.
Prior to joining Stone in 2004, David held executive positions with Amoco and later BP, including Director of Strategic Planning, President of the Amoco Gulf Group, Sr. VP of BP North America and President of BP Alaska Canada Gas. He also spent 5 years with the US Geological Survey and one as an adjunct professor at Tulane University in the graduate school.
David studied Petroleum Engineering at LSU and Colorado School of Mines, got his Doctorate in Chemical Engineering and Finance at Tulane University, and Post Doctorate Business degree at Harvard University. He completed his doctorate dissertation entitled World Oil Market Economics and has testified on multiple occasions before the US Senate on energy related issues.
David also served on the Board of Directors of Iberia Bank Corp., Chairman of the Board of Amicus Oil and Gas, past Chairman of the Offshore Energy Center, trustee of the National Conservancy, and past President of the National Ocean Industries Association.
David had varied interests, including tennis, golf, poetry writing, regenerative medicine, and oil and gas exploration and production; but most important to him were his family, especially his grandchildren.
Relatives and Friends of the Family are invited to attend the Funeral Service in the Chapel of MOTHE FUNERAL HOME, 2100 Westbank Expy, Harvey, LA on Saturday, August 18, 2018 at 1:30 PM. Visitation will be held Saturday from 11 AM until funeral time. Interment will be private. A Memorial Service to celebrate David’s life will be held at Timberlane Country Club in Gretna, La on Sunday, August 19, 2018 from 2 PM until 5 PM. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to United Way of Lafayette or The Nature Conservancy.
