Alma Louise Smith

May 11, 1921 — October 9, 2016

Alma Louise Smith was born in Baltimore, MD on May 11, 1921 and passed away on October 9, 2016 at Riverbend Nursing and Rehabilitation.

Alma graduated from Forest Park High School in Baltimore and from Towson State Teachers’ College, now Towson University in Maryland. After a brief teaching stint, she and best friend, Mildred Proske moved to New Orleans to attend graduate school at Tulane University together. In 1949, she received her Master’s in Social Work and then spent the next three decades working in that field. She retired from Family Service of Greater New Orleans where she oversaw interning graduate students from Tulane University.

In the mid-1950s, she and her friend Mildred pooled resources to buy a house in a new development in Algiers where they lived for over 50 years. The two ladies loved to travel and saw much of the world as well as Canada and Mexico. Together they bought rental property on Sanibel Island which they enjoyed in the off season. Alma loved to garden, to play bridge and to bake. Alma and Milly both belonged to a neighborhood group called “Bon Appetite”

Failing health several years ago, forced them to move into assisted living at Woldenberg. After Mildred’s passing in 2013, Alma was transferred to Riverbend Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.

Alma was the daughter of the late Frederick W. Smith and Clara Bitz Smith and sister of the late Robert L. Smith, and aunt of the late Lynn Smith Perrault of Baltimore. She is survived only by her niece Roberta Smith Jones and husband, Gareth Jones and their two daughters -Wendelyn Jones and Kimberly Jones Bruning and children. All who live in Maryland.

A graveside funeral service will be held on Monday October 17th at 2:30 pm at Westlawn Cemetery, 1225 Whitney Avenue in Gretna, LA.
