Alvin “Sandy” Sanborn was called to heaven with his family by his side on July 27, 2014 at West Jefferson Medical Center in Marrero, LA due to complications from a sudden cardiac arrest. Born on June 20, 1932, he was 82 years of age. Alvin is survived by his beloved wife Enrica Dalag Sanborn of Harvey, LA; son Ricky Lee Sanborn and his wife Margarita Navarro Sanborn of San Jose, CA; and grandchildren Marion Kristen Sanborn and Christopher Phillip Sanborn of San Jose, CA. Also survived by his loving sister Margaret Kaaiohelo Sanborn of San Diego, CA. Predeceased by his parents James Kimo Sanborn Jr. and Margaret Kaaiohelo Malahu Sanborn of Honolulu, HI and his siblings James K. Sanborn III of Kailua, HI and Roberta Leinaala Yasui of Honolulu, HI.
Alvin was a career military man serving over 30 years in the U.S. Coast Guard as a radioman and retiring at the rank of Master Chief Petty Officer in 1987. He served during the Korean and Vietnam wars with duty stations in Sangley Point Naval Station, Philippines; Honolulu, HI; Seattle, WA; San Diego, CA; Long Beach, CA; Miami, FL; U.S. Territory of Guam; and New Orleans, LA. Alvin also worked as mail handler for the U.S. Postal Service in New Orleans, LA from 1990 to 1999.
Alvin loved athletics lettering in varsity basketball at Laupahoehoe High School on the Big Island of Hawaii where he received the nickname “Class”. He was also an avid body builder earning the titles of Mr. Connecticut and Mr. Philippines in the 1950’s and was a Black Belt in Kempo Karate. During his military career he excelled in softball and volleyball winning various military leagues and tournaments as both player and coach.
Family and friends are invited to attend a funeral service at St. Martha Catholic Church, 2555 Apollo Drive in Harvey, LA on Friday August 1, 2014 at 10:00 am. Internment will be at Diamond Head Memorial Park, Honolulu, HI to be arranged at a later date.
