Basil Tom Cheeks

Basil Tom Cheeks, a former grocery store owner in Marrero, LA entered into eternal rest on Monday, August 27, 2012 at West Jefferson Hospital at the age of 91. Beloved husband of the late Frances Howel by first marriage and the late Melvina Collins Cheeks by second marriage. Son of the late Louis Chain Cheeks and Odie Porter Cheeks. Father of Darlene Howell (Husband Chuck) and the late Charles Cheeks and Alton Bruce Cheeks (Survived by wife Sue). Step-father of Judy Gaudin (Husband, the late Leon, Sr.), Milton Collins (Wife Sharon), and Barbara Dufour (Husband Wayne). Brother of Billy Wayne Cheeks and the late J.P. Cheeks, Nellie Dean, Alta Mae Bostick, Lula Pearl Greenwood and Pearline Jinks. Basil is survived by 5 grandchildren, 5 great grandchildren, 9 step grandchildren, 11 step great grandchildren, 7 step great great grandchildren, 1 expected step grandchild and 1 expected step great great grandchild. His special niece, Clarice Hart and her husband, Cliff loved him very much. He was a wonderful husband, father, step father, grandfather and step grandfather and was loved by many. He was witty, smart, joyful and a great storyteller. He was a resident of Terrytown, LA. Basil and the love of his life, his wife, Melvina enjoyed many years of traveling throughout the United States. He worked 37 years with Cooper T. Smith Stevedoring as an electrician and served 2 years in the US Army as a Sharp Shooter. The family would like to extend a sincere appreciation to his neighbors, Anna Marie and husband Carlos and Antoinette and husband David; his doctor and friend, Dr. Patricia Estrada; Pastor David Murray and wife Diane Murray; Staff of West Jefferson Hospital and Trauma Center for their love and care. Relatives and friends, also employees of Jefferson Parish School Board, Retired employees of Bell South and AT&T and employees of Chase and Eureka National Banks are invited to attend the visitation at MOTHE FUNERAL HOME, 2100 Westbank Expressway, Harvey, LA on Saturday, September 8, 2012 from 8:30AM until 11AM. Funeral Services will be held in the Chapel on Saturday at 11AM. Interment will be in Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery, Gretna, LA.
