A native of Addis, LA and a resident of Marrero, LA for the past 60 plus years.
Bertha was born in “Back Choctaw,” a small community just west of Addis and Brusly. Her parents were Louis Robertson Cazes (Army Lieutenant during WWI and conductor for T&P Railroad) and Marie Nina Thibodeaux Cazes. Bertha grew up in Addis where she attended the one-room school house. She went on to earn her Bachelor of Science Degree from The Southwestern Louisiana Institute of Liberal and Technical Learning (currently University of Louisiana in Lafayette). That’s where she met her future husband - they were married at St. John’s Cathedral in Lafayette on September 22, 1940. While Clarence served in the army during WWII, she and her first son lived close to her parents in Addis. Upon Clarence’s honorable discharge, the family moved several times, finally establishing permanent residence in Marrero, Louisiana. Bertha spent more than half of her 62 years in Marrero teaching first grade in Jefferson Parish Public Schools (Marrero Jr. High and Miller Wall Elementary). She was a teacher in all she did, always sharing bits of wisdom and teaching others how to love! She was a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church throughout this time – she will always be known for her strong faith, loving character, and devotion to her family. She died peacefully in her sleep with her family at her side.
Relatives and friends of the family are invited to attend a Funeral Mass at Immaculate Conception Church, 4401 7th St., Marrero, LA on Friday, January 20, 2017 at 1:45 pm.
