Betty Jean Jurisich Bascle

July 25, 1930 — March 1, 2023

Betty Jean Jurisich Bascle entered into eternal rest on Wednesday, March 1, 2023 at the age of 92. Betty Jean was born on July 25, 1930 to Alice Ernest Jurisich and John Jurisich, and was brought up from birth in the D'Hemecourt Street home in Mid City of her loving grandparents, Stephen and Louise Ernest, along with her dearly beloved aunts, Bessie Doherty and Katherine Ernest. Betty Jean had one sister, Shirley Patricia Jurisch Maillho. She was a graduate of Sacred Heart of Jesus High School in 1948, and kept those friends and memories dear her entire life. Betty also kept warm family ties to her father's Croatian (Yugoslavian) cousins throughout the city.
When Betty was 18, she married James Earl Mattingly, Jr., of Marengo Street, and after moving to Metairie, a brand new suburb of New Orleans, she became a mother to Susan Jean Mattingly Baham (Samuel), James E. Mattingly, III (Karen), Patricia Mattingly Duffey (Dan) of North Carolina, and Kathleen Mattingly Burgdahl (Russell).
Betty Jean married Donald Louis Bascle in 1965 and they became the parents of Ryan Joseph Bascle (Jessica). Betty Jean and Donald were childhood sweethearts at the age of 10, maintaining their love for each other throughout their lives, coming together after each had been married and after each had become the parents to four children.
Betty Jean leaves behind many grandchildren: Brandon Mattingly (Kandi), Michael Mattingly (Melissa), Kellie Mattingly Smith (Jonathan), Nicole Mattingly, Samuel Baham, Benjamin Duffey (Yi), Dylan Duffey, and Colleen Wientjes Tifft (Billy), Barrett Burgdahl, Gavin Bascle, and Nyla Bascle; and great-grandchildren Madison and Mason Mattingly; Maxwell and Miles Mattingly; Rowan Margaret Lawson and Rori Grace Tifft; Averie, Camden and Alexandra Smith; and Eleanor Duffey of Cary, NC. Betty Jean also leaves behind her nephews and niece, Alexander, Mark, and Bonnie Maillho.
Before her marriage to Jim, Betty attended Sophie Newcomb College, the women's college of Tulane University, which Jim attended. As was common for some women in the 1950s, Betty Jean decided motherhood would be her path, and left Newcomb before finishing a degree. When she later went back to work, Betty Jean became a secretary in many fields over the years, including medicine, law, and government. She worked until her retirement at the age of 62 for Jefferson Parish government.
After caring for Donald in their Arlene Street home until his death, Betty Jean remained there, assisted by wonderful caregivers, Bob Fonseca and Alberta “Muffie” DiBartolo.
Betty Jean was predeceased by her sister, Shirley, and her parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles. She will be deeply missed by all.
