Betty Jean Hamby

Betty J. Hamby, 87, died Monday, November 20, 2023. She was a longtime resident of Belle Chasse, Louisiana. She was born Betty Jean Stroud on March 1936 in Crowville, Louisiana. Betty graduated from Natchez High School in 1954. She continued her education at Southern Baptist Hospital, Mather School of Nursing in New Orleans graduating in 1957. She completed a Bachelor of Science in 1991.

She retired from Southern Baptist Hospital where she was an obstetric nurse on the Labor and Delivery unit. While at SBH, she worked with the perinatologist caring for high-risk pregnancies. Betty was a member of Association of Women’s Health Obstetric and Neonatal Nurses, Republican Women of Louisiana. As a member of First Baptist Church Belle Chasse, she enjoyed teaching a ladies bible study, and working with students/youth. She enjoyed crafting, especially sewing. Painting was her passion; many of her paintings were displayed throughout her home. 

Mrs. Hamby was presided in death by her husband of 38 years, Donald W. Hamby, her parents William H. Stroud and Mae Bedford Bilbo, and her sister, Wilmoth M. Stroud. She is survived by her three children, Carolyn Ott (David) of Belle Chasse, Janice Munkres (late Glenn “Buddy” Munkres) of Terrytown, and Eric Hamby of Belle Chasse. She has four grandchildren who she was immensely proud of Jennifer Munkres of Terrytown, James Ott (Calla) of Broussard, Glenn “Scott” Munkres Sr. (Kimi) of Belle Chasse, and Jarred Ott (Jamie) of Chalmette. She enjoyed visiting with her great-grandchildren Glenn Munkres Jr., Augie Ott, Melody Ott, Parker Munkres, Rook Ott, Angelica Rutherford, and Christian Rutherford. 

Family, friends, employees of Our Lady of Wisdom Community Care Center and Heart of Hospice are invited to attend a celebration of life on Tuesday, November 28th at Mothe Funeral Home in Harvey beginning with visitation at 9:30 am. A service will be celebrated at 11:00 am with interment to follow at Westlawn Cemetery. Arrangements by Mothe Funeral Home.
