Catherine Ann Potts Butler

Catherine Ann Potts Butler on Saturday, May 18, 2013 at 6:00am, whom was the beloved wife of Michael Craig Butler, spread her wings and took flight home into eternal rest at the age of 55. She was born in Port Sulphur, LA and was a life-long resident of Plaquemines Parish. Cathy Ann was the daughter of Emma Faye Corkern Potts and the late Richard D. Potts. The sister of Carolyn Potts Ritchey (Tony), Mark Varnado (Heather), Tammy Severson (Kevin), Myra Oubre (C.A.), Melissa Remiker (Rob), Chuck Varnado (Leigh), Darrin Varnado, John Varnado (Lavelle), and the late Brian Varnado (Chrissy) and Duane Kuhlmann. To Myra and Kenneth Kuhlmann, Cathy Ann was more than a niece, she was considered a daughter and Cathy loved and admired them more than words could say. She was the special granddaughter of the late Clyde and Donice Corkern and daughter-in-law of Deanna B. Butler and the late Alvin “Mitt” Butler and sister-in-law of Bill Butler (Jennifer) and Julie Butler.
“Nanny” will be remembered in the hearts of her godchildren Denise Hall, Ryan Anglada, Brooke Morgan, Katie Isaacks, Jasmine Smith, and Ashton and Allie Rojas. Cathy leaves behind lots of loved nieces, nephews, Emily Lusk (Mel), Caine, David, and Jordan Ritchey, Ashley and Dylan Butler. Family and friends will remember Cathy, her generosity, and big heart. Cathy was always there when anyone needed help or a shoulder to cry on and will be greatly missed by all that came to know her.
Cathy was a dedicated employee for the Plaquemines Parish Sheriff’s Office for 27 years. She retired in 2012 as a Lieutenant and worked closely with many other departments and agencies throughout her career including Tax Collection Supervisor, DEA Task Force Narcotics Agent, co-founder of the Plaquemines Community CARE Center, developed the first PPSO Domestic Violence/Child Abuse Unit while serving as the first Chief Domestic Violence Officer in Plaquemines Parish as Detective Lieutenant of the detective bureau, a member of FOP (Fraternal Order of Police Deep Delta Lodge 27), and served as coordinator for Special Olympics Law Enforcement Torch Run for 18 years, encouraging many athletes, including her “heart” - Carla. Commendations include 8 service awards from Special Olympics, 5 commendations for outstanding work in drug enforcement from the U.S. Dept. of Justice, outstanding undercover work in Narcotics from NOPD, Service Award from Care Center, Service Award from VFW Post 6402, Outstanding Law Enforcement Officer Award for 2009 from the Victims and Citizens Against Crime. Along with these accomplishments she was also co-owner of the Venice Marina.
Graduated from Delta Heritage Academy in 1976, she attended Nichols State University and received her POST Certification from the Gretna Police Academy Class 17 in 1993.

Family, friends, and employees of the Plaquemines Parish Sheriff’s Office, the 25th Judicial System, District Attorney’s Office and Venice Marina are invited to attend a funeral mass at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church, Belle Chasse, LA on Wednesday, May 22, 2013 at 11:30 am.
