Charles Edward Partridge

July 20, 1933 — March 19, 2014

Captain Charles 'Sonny' Partridge passed away March 19, 2014 at the age of 80 after having dedicated his life to his two great loves--his wife of over 60 years, Ruth Bell Partridge, and the river. His love for his wife began one afternoon in a soda shop in 1951 while his love for the river started when his father first introduced him to riverboats at the age of 5; he, too, was a towboat captain on the Illinois River. Captain Sonny was piloting towboats by the age of 10 and became one of the youngest captains on the river at the age of 17. It wasn't very long before he left the Illinois River for the Mississippi River. His entire adult life was spent navigating the 'mighty' Mississippi. He retired at the age of 75. He inspired and entertained everyone he met with his wisdom, wit, and stories of his time on the river. Captain Sonny had a rare talent and feel for the river; many a captain had told him so. The Mississippi River has lost one of its legends. In addition to his wife, Ruth, he is survived by his daughter, Cindy Partridge Al-Salamah, his son, Rickey Charles Partridge, 6 grandchildren, and 5 great-grandchildren. In lieu of flowers please send a donation to the American Lung Association of Louisiana. MOTHE FUNERAL HOME, 1300 Vallette Street, Algiers, LA in charge of arrangements.
