Dr Dickens Mario Lagos PhD. peacefully passed away the morning of Tuesday, April 16th, in the company of those who cared for him. Dickens was born the only son to Edison and Martha Lagos, in the town of Requinoa, and raised in Santiago, Chile. He was a loving brother to four sisters, always offering a calm and comforting presence. Dickens attended the Universidad Catolica de Chile, where he obtained a bachelors and masters degree in Chemistry. This is also where he met his wife, Mariell. Always the quintessential gentleman, he saw that she was standing and gave her his seat in exchange for holding a tall stack of textbooks as they were riding the same city bus. They married on May 24th, 1963, in Santiago. The couple would then emigrate to the United States in search of his Doctorate and greater opportunities for their future family.
Always striving to better himself, Dickens obtained his PhD in Organic Chemistry from Loyola University, in New Orleans. Throughout his academic pursuits, Dickens was always known by faculty and colleagues for his strong work ethic and natural brilliance. His dedication led to lifelong success and in founding his own business in the coatings industry, which he dutifully worked in to provide for his children and grandchildren. Following 65 years together, Dickens is survived by his wife, Mariell. Their love engendered two children, Ivan and Verushka, as well as several grandchildren and great-grandchildren who will continue in his footsteps of higher learning.
Dickens was known for his calming presence, strong work ethic, and above all, selfless devotion to his family and friends. He was a remarkable, generous, and loving man and an example to live by. His spirit will forever live on, he was truly a mentor, and his lessons will continue to be passed on for generations in the love we feel for him and each other.
