Dorothy Miremont Dupuy

January 2, 1926 — June 30, 2016

Dorothy Miremont Dupuy passed from this life to the next on June 30, 2016, surrounded by those she loved and who loved her, especially her husband of seventy-one years, Harvey Jerome Dupuy, Sr., who noted that "she was a strong woman--and fun."
Born Dorothy Jean Miremont on January 2, 1926, in Little Rock, Arkansas, she was the daughter of Lillian Leche Miremont and Louis E. Miremont. She was preceded in death by three sisters (Margaret Cazes of Plaquemine, Lillian Breaux of Sulphur, and Jessie Miremont, who died in childhood) and a brother (Louis E. “Ed” Miremont of Baton Rouge). The mother of seven children, Jerrie Jean Earthman of Houston (married to Donald Earthman), Jessie Pauline “Polly” Ellerton of Denver (married to John James Ellerton), Harvey Jerome Dupuy, Jr., of Houston (married to Renee Baudier), Deborah Annette Giglio of Lafayette (married to Joseph C. Giglio, Jr.), Michael John Dupuy of Phoenix (married to Shelley Kinnerup), Edward Joseph Dupuy of San Antonio (married to Jan Fluitt), and John Roy Dupuy of Los Angeles. She suffered the loss of Jessie Pauline and John Roy, both in 1994, leaving the funeral of Polly in Denver to be at the sickbed of John in Los Angeles, who ultimately died in New Orleans after being cared for in her home. Married at the age of 19 to Harvey Jerome Dupuy in San Pedro, California on January 27, 1945, she returned to Plaquemine while Harvey served in the Pacific during World War II. When the war ended they lived variously in Baton Rouge, Venice, Lafayette and New Orleans, making New Orleans home since 1972. Never having finished college, Dorothy nevertheless possessed a shrewd intelligence and wicked sense of humor, and she insisted, using various methods of persuasion, that her children be well-educated, making personal sacrifices and enlisting her iron-clad will to see that they would. In this way she saw her three daughters take degrees and work in medical technology, nursing and speech therapy, while two of her sons became physicians, one a petroleum engineer, and the other a Ph.D. in English. She was deeply proud of her family and took great delight in seeing it expand, with 20 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren (listed below). Her love of family evolved from a deep Catholic faith to which she held with both ferocity and tolerance. She cared for the retired sisters of the Marianites of Holy Cross for several decades, enlisting Harvey to serve as Santa Claus at the annual Christmas Party, and she was devoted to the Monks of Saint Joseph Abbey in Covington, Louisiana, and to her home parish of Saint Andrew the Apostle in Algiers, where she and Harvey stayed active as members of the SAGES (Saint Andrews’ Gregarious Elders). Her faith sustained her through the death of Polly and John and through her decline in the last months and final days. Faith and family were complemented by many deep and lasting friendships, notably with Marie Amadee of Belle Chasse, Mildred Newsome of Dallas, Pat Kilroy of Boston, and countless others who were touched by her abundant energy, her joy for life, and her good cooking. She loved to entertain, welcoming to her home friends of children and then grandchildren, and until only a few years ago, she went down to the corner of St. Charles and Louisiana Avenues annually for Mardi Gras, shouting for beads and doubloons with the crowds. In her final days, she had many visitors. Harvey and the family thank them and especially thank her caregivers—Alma Hurlston, Alma Tayler, Sylvia Galeano, and Carmen Zalaya. They wish to thank, too, the staff of Notre Dame Hospice and Dr. David Hutchinson. A private funeral liturgy will be held on July 3, 2016, the Abbey Church, Saint Joseph Abbey. Abbot Justin Brown, OSB, will be the celebrant. Interment of ashes will follow the liturgy in the cemetery at Saint Joseph Abbey, in a gravesite next to her son, John. A celebration of life will take place in August at a date to be determined. In lieu of flowers please send donations to the Saint Joseph Abbey Flood Relief Fund, 75376 River Road, St. Benedict, LA 70457, or at http://www.saintjosephabbey.com/helptheabbey/ .
