Elvira Rubio Ussery passed away peacefully Saturday, June 1, 2024, with her family by her side in her New Orleans (Algiers) home.
She was the daughter of the late Mariano Rubio Trabanino and Amelia Aldana de Rubio of Guatemala. She was the sister of the late Sofia Rubio (Genaro) and Julia Torres (Fidel) of Guatemala. She is survived by her sisters, Maria Belarmina Rubio Steele of Orlando, FL, and Cony Villacorta Rubio of Kenner, LA.
She was the loving, kind, sweet, carinosa wife of the luckiest guy in the world, Robert W. "Bob" Ussery, the mother of Robert Wayne Ussery and Kenny Ussery, and grandmother of Charlotte, Alexandra, William and Robert Ussery. Elvira, alias Bidi and Abuelita, was born in Guatemala and came to New Orleans in 1965.
She became friends with Art and Vicky Roane of Gretna, who introduced her to Bob Ussery in 1967 because he knew a little Spanish. A little knowledge being a dangerous thing, they fell madly in love and had 56 years and seven months of a deliriously happy, loving and hilarious marriage. They clung to each other tenderly and gratefully with much passion and laughter.
The good hearted Elvira was touchingly eager to be considerate of her family and made the greatest Guatemalan tamales and tortillas, and fried chicken and banana pancakes. Bob loved her Guatemalan dessert called molletes. She was also an avid gardener and she and Bob enjoyed spending time with their friends, the late Elvin and Maria Dumas of Gretna, LA. Some of her favorite pieces of music were Ferrocarril de los Altos, Luna de Xelaju, and La Media Vuelta.
She took her shy Roberto under her wing and gave him strength, confidence and courage to live life to the fullest. She was was little older, but she seemed to wait for her and Bob to have a good long marriage before departing. We will never forget her.
Funeral arrangements are pending. Please check back for updates.
