Ennis Henry Grundmeyer

Ennis Henry Grundmeyer, beloved husband and father, passed away peacefully at his home on Saturday, March 22, 2014, surrounded by his three sons.

Born December 30, 1930, he was a lifelong resident of Algiers. Husband of the late Patricia Ann Grundmeyer. Son of the late Arthur and Imelda Grundmeyer. In 1952, while stationed in England during the Korean War he met Patricia Ann Burrenstone, the love of his life, in London. They married on December 12, 1953 at Corpus Christi Church in Brixton Hill, England. Grundmeyer returned home to Algiers with his lovely bride to begin their lives and raise a family of three sons – Ennis Jr., Wade and Brad.

Ennis graduated from Martin Behrman High in 1948 and attended the University of Southwestern Louisiana where he played baseball for the Ragin’ Cajuns. In 1952, he enlisted with the U.S. Air Force as a Staff Sergeant and Explosive Foreman earning the National Defense Service Medal. Following his return to New Orleans, he worked for 28 years with National Life Insurance as an agent and manager. In 1984, he was elected Constable, Second City Court in Algiers serving the community he loved. He remained in office for 28 years until 2012.

Known as “Father Time” for running the game clock for more than a half century for Tulane football and basketball, the New Orleans Saints, 9 Super Bowls, 40 Sugar Bowls, 4 Final Fours and a host of other major and minor sporting events in New Orleans. He also officiated Louisiana high school sports for more than 25 years.

Ennis served as President & Chairman of the Krewe of Choctaw, Co-Captain of the Algier’s Irish Rebels & Friendship Club, Board Member of the Friends of the Algiers Courthouse, Member of the Algiers Kiwanis Club, and Member of the American Legion Post #218. In 2001, he reorganized and served as President of the Westbank Quarterback Club recognizing the athletic accomplishments of area high school students.

Ennis was warm, caring and just fun to be around. A wonderful and devoted husband, he cherished his beautiful wife and enjoyed living the true love story they shared together. Their lives were their “boys” who they encouraged and supported in everything they did, wanted to do and aspired to be. No wife or child could have ever asked for a better husband, father and friend. He loved his sons and cherished each of his seven grandchildren, each one a blessing and joy in his life.

Father-in-law of Angela Gainey Grundmeyer and Kelly Belsome Grundmeyer. Grandfather of Coldin, Addison, Avery, McKenzie, Aidan, Kellan and Brayden Grundmeyer. Brother of the late Arthur G. “Nook” Grundmeyer, Jr. and Brother-in-law of Shirley Huff Grundmeyer. Son-in-law of the late Trevor and Vera Burrenstone. Survived by many nieces and nephews.

Relatives and friends of the family, and all Elected Officials are invited to attend Funeral Mass in the Chapel MOTHE FUNERAL HOME, 2100 Westbank Expressway, Harvey, LA on Thursday, March 27, 2014 at 11:00 am with interment at Westlawn Cemetery in Gretna, LA.
