Gerald R. Buras, Sr., born on October 9, 1934 in New Orleans, Louisiana, passed to eternal life on November 20, 2023 in Halfmoon, New York. Mr. Buras, a native of Buras, Louisiana, lived in Belle Chasse and Baton Rouge, Louisiana and in Georgetown and Houston, Texas.
Mr. Buras’ greatest love was Muriel, his wife of sixty-seven years. All who knew Mr. Buras witnessed his deep love for his family. His eyes danced with joy over grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was a devoted Catholic and gave the gift of faith and devotion to his children and their families.
Mr. Buras began his almost forty-year career with Freeport Sulfur Company after graduating from high school and quickly advanced to the position of Coatings and Corrosive Specialist and a Supervisor for Engineering Services. He taught engineering classes for Delgado College in New Orleans. He served as president of the Buras Fire Department. He was an active member of the Knights of Columbus.
Mr. Buras was the epitome of a Louisiana gentleman - kind, honest and capable, and eager to offer help or advice on anything. He loved to build and fix things. Always working on home improvements, he even built their first house. To comfort his children, he often quipped, “I can fix anything except a broken heart.”
He was preceded in death by his parents, George and Marie Louise Soniat DuFossat Buras, his siblings, twin sister Geraldine, George, Elmer, and Betty. He is survived by his loving wife, Muriel, and his children, Gerald Buras, Jr. (Meagan), Ronald Buras (Lee Ann), Donna Haskins (Andrew), Mary Faller (Carlton) and David Buras (Michelle). He is also survived by his ten grandchildren, James Buras (Rebecca), John Ratcliff (Stephanie), Steven Buras (Caitlin), Blake Buras (Meredith), Brooke Buras, Jason Haskins (Rebecca), Rebekah Hand (John); Miles Faller (Tara), Matthew Faller, and Jacob Buras; and his eleven great-grandchildren, Miriam, Cecilia, and Cora Hildegard Haskins; Katherine, John Joseph, Theodore, Gregory, and Margaret Hand; Charles and Emily Ratcliff; and William "Liam" Buras. He is also survived by his brother, Simon Buras and his sister, Patsy Crowe.
