Gerald J. “Jerry” Sellers died peacefully after a long battle with pancreatic cancer. He was a beloved teacher, assistant principal and an administrative assistant for the Jefferson Parish Public School System. Jerry also taught school in the parishes of Iberville, Lafayette and Orleans as well as in Tokyo, Japan. He was born in Kaplan, LA; graduated from Kaplan High School with the class of 1959; attended UL of Monroe, LA receiving a Bachelor of Science Degree. In 1975, he received a Master Degree at Loyola University, New Orleans, LA. He later received a Master plus 30 from varied universities. In 1965 he joined the United States Air Force serving four years. Jerry was selected as King Arthur in 1995 for the Mardi Gras Krewe of King Arthur. Jerry will be remembered as a very caring and giving person who always placed others before himself and a compassionate and vibrant person. He was preceded in death by his parents, the late Sidney J. Sellers and Leola Landry Sellers. Survivors include his sister, Judy Sellers Jeanfreau and brother-in-law, Raymond Jeanfreau of Belle Chasse, LA; three nephews and one niece and their spouses, Kevin and Paula Reese of Lafayette, LA, Brent and Rhyana Reese of Lafayette, LA, Blake and Jennifer Reese of Houston, TX and Kim and Rick Hycoop of Huntsville, AL; six grand nephews, Matthew, Brian, Mark, Ethan, Brandon and Evan and five grand nieces, Halley, Kerri, Mallory, Jena, Megan and Emma. Mr. Sellers was a past member of the Association of Supervision and Curriculum Development, Louisiana Association of Principals, Louisiana Association of School Executives, Jefferson Parish Reading Association (President 1996), Louisiana Reading Association, the National Reading Association and current member of the Louisiana Teachers Association and Past member and 1995 King of the Krewe of King Arthur. Visitation will be held at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church on Saturday from 9AM until 10AM. A Memorial Mass will be held at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church, Highway 23, Belle Chasse, LA on Saturday, March 29, 2014 at 10AM. He will be laid to rest in a private family graveside service in the Kaplan Cemetery in Kaplan, LA. In lieu of flowers, family and friends are asked to have Masses said or donations to be made to Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church, 8968 Belle Chasse Hwy, Belle Chasse, LA 70037.
