Gertrude “Gert” Falcon Himel died peacefully on August 22, 2016 at the age of 97 years. Survivors include her son, Whitless “Whit” T. Himel Jr. and his wife Nadya; daughter Louana H. Frois and her husband Ted; granddaughter Monica Frois and like a granddaughter, Eve Masinter along with many loving nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Whitless “Pete” T. Himel Sr. and her sister, Enola F. France.
Gert was a lifelong member of the Marrero and Gretna communities and St. Joseph Church, where she was confirmed and married. She was a wonderful cook, avid gardener and antique collector. She was a loving and generous wife, mother, grandmother, aunt and friend. She sought God’s help, guidance and love throughout her long life. The Celebration of Mass was a source of spiritual renewal, strength and comfort for her. She made a lasting impression on everyone with her charm, graciousness, keen sense of humor and infectious smile. Gert touched the lives of so many and will be sadly missed, but her life will be celebrated.
The family would like to express their gratitude to Ana Perez and Isabel Perez for their care and compassion. In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to the Development Department, New Orleans City Park, Attn: John Hopper, (specify the donation is in memory of Gertrude Himel) #1 Palm Drive, New Orleans, LA 70124 for a lasting memorial structure in the gardens of the Park.
Relatives and friends of the family are invited to attend the visitation at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 600 Sixth Street in Gretna on Friday, August 26, 2016 from 9 AM to 10 AM. A Funeral Mass will follow. Interment Westlawn Memorial Park.
