Dr. Hugh Pierce Champagne, a native of New Orleans, LA, and a retired dentist in practice over 50 years in Gretna, LA, passed away on August 4, 2024 at the age of 91. Father of the late Hugh P. Champagne, Jr., the late Mary Louise (Mary Lou) Champagne, Mary Clare Therese (Terri) Champagne, Michael L. Champagne (wife Leslie), Stephen P. Champagne (wife Jana), David W. Champagne, and Mary Patricia (Patti) Champagne Cox (husband Michael). He was also married to the late Clare Lynne Gray Champagne, mother of their seven children.
He was preceded in death by his parents, the late Louis G. Champagne and the late Carmelite M. Champagne; and his sister, the late Sister Mary Clare Therese Champagne, BVM (nee’ Eloise Champagne).
He is also survived by five grandchildren – Patrick C. Sudderth (wife Tracy), Michael Louis Champagne, Jr. (wife Christine), Michael S. Cox, Jr., Lauren E. Cox and Jadyn G. Champagne; along with one great-grandson – Steven P. Sudderth.
Dr. Champagne was a graduate of St. Ignatius College Preparatory School in San Francisco, CA (1951). He attended the University of San Francisco and was a graduate of Tulane University (B.S. - 1955) and Loyola University School of Dentistry (D.D.S. - 1961).
He was a proud member of the New Orleans Graduate Chapter of Delta Sigma Delta International Professional Dental Fraternity, and served as their Supreme Grand Master in 2000. He was an active member of the American Dental Association (ADA), Louisiana Dental Association (LDA) and New Orleans Dental Association (NODA).
An Army veteran, he was stationed at Fort McClellan, Anniston, AL in the U.S. Army Chemical Corp. School; he served a total of five years in Active and Reserve duty and was Honorably Discharged.
He was a former member of the Golden Gryphon Society (Krewe of ALLA) Carnival Club, and a former member of the Krewe of Janus Carnival Club.
The family would like to extend its utmost thanks and gratitude to the entire staff at Woldenberg Village (Willow Wood) for providing him with comfort and care, kindness and love over the past six years. Additional thanks goes out to the Hospice Specialists of Louisiana team for the comfort and care, kindness and love they provided as well.
