John Arthur Camus, affectionately known as "Sput," passed away peacefully at home on January 24, 2025, at the age of 67. Born on October 27, 1957, in New Orleans, Sput lived a life guided by honesty, loyalty, and a deep love for his family.
Sput was a dedicated Locomotive Engineer for Southern Pacific Railroad, working tirelessly until his retirement in 2003. He was proud of his career, always ready to share stories of his time on the rails. Above all else, he believed that being a man of your word was the most important thing a person could be.
Never one to sugarcoat his thoughts, Sput told it like it was—whether you wanted to hear it or not. His honesty was unwavering, and though his words could sometimes be blunt, they were always spoken with truth and conviction. Family meant everything to him, and he took pride in creating moments filled with laughter, good food, and unforgettable memories. Crawfish boils and backyard barbecues weren’t just gatherings in his home—they were traditions where stories flowed as freely as the beer, and everyone knew they were part of something special.
Sput had a passion for fishing, finding peace in the stillness of the water, where he could reflect and enjoy the simple pleasures of life. He also loved a good bet, but never quite knew how to walk away a winner.
He is survived by his son, Shane Lee Camus (Rebecca), and daughter, Jackie C. Truxillo (Kyle), who will carry his legacy forward. He was also a loving father figure to Amber Herpin and Brittany Picard who held a special place in his heart. His eight grandchildren adored him and will forever remember the lessons and love he shared. His siblings—Jack Camus (Lori), Anthony Camus (Jolene), Wanda Verdi, Deborah Viator (Mike), Kathy Mitchell (Lawrence), and Lisa Barber—will miss their brother dearly but will cherish the countless memories they built together. He also leaves behind several beloved nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Jackson Lee and Anna Elizabeth Camus, who undoubtedly welcomed him home with open arms.
