John F. Dalton, Sr.

John F. Dalton, Sr., affectionately known as "Whitey," passed away on October 4, 2024, at the age of 88. A dedicated husband, father, and grandfather, John touched the lives of many during his time with us.

Born on December 2, 1935, John was a proud graduate of Holy Name of Mary Elementary School and De La Salle High School in 1956. Following his education, he served honorably in the Louisiana Air National Guard for 11 years, demonstrating a commitment to his country that he carried throughout his life.

After serving in the military, John began a long and fulfilling career with the Southern Pacific Railroad, from which he retired after 35 years. His work ethic and dedication were hallmarks of his professional life. John was also an active member of his community, and he served as a devout parishioner at Holy Name of Mary Catholic Church, where he held the positions of Eucharistic Minister and Usher, embodying his faith through service. He was a true servant leader. 

A man of kind and loving nature, John shared his passion for sports and mentorship by coaching CYO ball at Holy Name of Mary and Bodenger playground. His affiliation with community organizations reflected his vibrant personality. He was a lifetime member of the Knights of Columbus Santa Maria Council #1724, a board member of the Westbank Quarterback Club, and a member of the Sunshine Club of Algiers. He started and operated men's softball and flag football leagues in Algiers and Gretna for over 20 years. Additionally, John contributed to youth sports in the area as a referee for CSAL grammar school sports, playground sports, and high school sports.

John is survived by his loving wife of 52 years, Mary Anne Palisi Dalton, and their children: Shawn LaGrange (Matthew), John Dalton Jr. (Charla), and Anne Marie Stelly (Zachary). He was also a proud grandfather to Ellie, Carson, and Aubrie Dalton, Halen LaGrange, and Ryen Reynolds, whose lives he enriched with his wisdom and warmth.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Clarence Dalton Sr. and Leona Weileman Dalton, and his siblings, Mallitta Dalton Davis and Clarence "Boysie" Dalton Jr.

Family, friends, and community members are invited to honor John's life and legacy. Visitation will be held on October 10, 2024, from 9:00 AM to 11:00 AM at Holy Name of Mary Catholic Church in New Orleans. A Mass will follow at 11:00 AM, with interment scheduled for 12:15 PM at St. Bartholomew Cemetery-Algiers.

John F. Dalton, Sr. leaves behind a legacy of love, faith, and service that will be cherished and remembered by all who knew him.
