John Walter Flatley died on May 25, 2015 in Slidell, LA at the age of 91. John was born on September 13, 1923 in New Orleans. He was born to the late John Flatley and Emma Burdette Flatley. His brother James Flatley and sisters Clare Flatley Ayers, Jane Flatley Longshore and Emma Flatley Nolan preceded him in death. John was married to Shirley Fagot Flatley for 50 years until her death in 1997.John and Shirley had 5 children: Judith Flatley Jewell (Bill) from Slidell and Andrew John Flatley from New Orleans. Three of their children preceded them in death, Dennis Michael Flatley (1950-1974) Keith Patrick Flatley (1951-1970) and Mary Clare Flatley (1958-1970). John had 3 grandchildren, Sara Jewell Delancy (Jason) of Slidell, Ellen Jewell Cain (Danny) of Dallas, TX and Paul Joseph Jewell (Kristin) from Lafayette. John was also blessed with 6 great grandsons, Evan John Delancy, Carter Mark Delancy, William Cole Jewell II, Matthew James Jewell, Marshall Wesley Cain, and Travis Patrick Cain. John also had many nieces and nephews who held a special place in his heart. John was a lifelong resident of New Orleans. He was born on Galvez Street and was a graduate of Warren Easton High School and attended Soule Business College. He served in Europe in the Army in WW II. John was in the Export Import business his whole working life. He worked for Otis McAllister Export Co for over 55 years. In 2002, he took over ownership of the company and ran the export business from his assisted living center until 2014. His success in business was based on his outgoing personality and impeccable reputation. His business associates were his friends as well. In 2004, he was honored as a PEOPLES HEALTH CHAMPION. He was recognized as a senior citizen who continued an active life even after age 65. Being introduced at the halftime of a Saints game in the Superdome was a highlight of his career. John was a devout Catholic and a member of St. Andrew the Apostle Parish for over 60 years having served on many committees in the parish and as an usher. He enthusiastically helped count the money collected in the Sunday offerings. He served on the parish council. As an active parent in the CYO, he enjoyed chaperoning the teen dances, and also planning activities with the young people. He and his wife, Shirley were honored in 1978 with the St. Louis Medallion, an award given by the Archbishop of New Oleans to one couple from each parish who are outstanding in their church activities. He was active in the Holy Name Society and served on many Capital Campaigns to raise money for the church and school buildings. He also went on retreat every year at Manresa. Visitation will be held at St. Andrew the Apostle Church, 3101 Eton St. on Friday, May 29, 2015 from 9am until 11am. Funeral Mass will follow at 11am. Interment, Cypress Grove Cemetery.
