John Francis “Jack” Garatie
January 6, 1929 ~ August 14, 2011
Jack was born in New Orleans, LA and raised in Algiers, but lived in Empire for most of his adult life. After losing his home to Hurricane Katrina, he spent several years in Houma, living near family. His final days were spent in the Southeast Louisiana War Veterans Home in Reserve.
Jack loved the water and spent his youth working on boats along the Mississippi River. He later worked on the charter boat, “Cougar” based in Empire. As a young man, he served his country proudly in the United States Marine Corps during the Korean War. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Marine Corps Association and the American Legion. Jack loved fishing, hunting, the outdoors and working with his hands.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Jennie Daley Garatie and Leon Anthony Garatie; two brothers, Leon D. Garatie and Thomas Joseph Garatie and one sister, Elaine Garatie Bush.
He is survived by his brother-in-law, Roy Bush; two sisters-in-law, Marie Saux Garatie and Alyce Roschuni Garatie; the families of 12 neices and nephews and the family of his dear friends, Natalie Coulon and the late Stanley Coulon.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend the visitation at MOTHE FUNERAL HOME, 2100 Westbank Expy., Harvey, LA on Thursday, August 18, 2011 from 9 AM to 11 AM. A Mass will follow in the Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will be private
