John Donner Nolan

J. Donner Nolan, Sr., beloved husband of the late Katherine Conzelmann Nolan for 62 years, passed away July 12, 2011 at the age of 95. He was the son of the late Norris Nolan, Sr. and Nora Donner Nolan. He was the loving father of Judith Nolan Nelson (Guy), Dr. John D. Nolan, Jr. (Terry), Michael E. Nolan (Cindy), Anne Nolan Miller (Billy), and Mary Lynn Nolan Pivach (George). Brother of the late Norris Nolan, Jr., Dr. Alvin Nolan, and D. Farrell Nolan. Also survived by sisters Clare N. Coney, Patricia N. Cuyler (Sherwood) and Nora N. Lambert (John). Also, survived by fifteen grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. He was a native of Algiers and attended Holy Name of Mary and McDonogh # 4 elementary schools. He was also a resident of Marrero, LA for 26 years and a resident of Gretna, LA at the time of his death. He graduated from S. J. Peters High School in 1933 and joined his father, Norris Nolan, to work in the N. J. Nolan Insurance Agency. He later became Secretary-Treasurer of Jefferson Parish Waterworks until 1951 when he retired to open a branch office of N. J. Nolan Insurance Agency in Marrero. He was elected to the board of directors of Fifth District Savings Bank, formerly Fifth District Homestead Society, in 1959, and upon the death of his father Norris Nolan was elected President in 1968, and later was elected Chairman of the Board in 1979 until he retired in 1992.At the time of his death he was serving as Chairman Emeritus of Fifth District Savings Bank.He was the past president of the New Orleans Savings and Loan League. While living in Marrero he was appointed chairman of the building committee of Immaculate Conception Parish by Msgr. Paul J. Gaudin, and over many years with the support of many parishioners construction began on a new elementary school, convent, cafeteria, gymnasium, church, rectory, and finally, Immaculata High School. During his years in Marrero, he served as President of the Holy Name Society, was President of West Bank deanery of Holy Name Societies, was Westbank representative of the Board of Associated Catholic Charities, and served on the Board of Hope Haven/Madonna Manor. When he moved from Marrero to Gretna in 1966, he became a parishioner of St. Anthony Parish under his good friend, Msgr. Gerard Poche. He was appointed a Eucharistic Minister of Communion and was honored by Catholic Charities as outstanding Senior Citizen of St. Anthony Parish. He also served for many years on the finance committee of St. Anthony Parish. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus Council # 1905 in Gretna and recently was honored for 73 years of service. At his death, he was serving as a member of the Board of Ambassadors of Our Lady of Holy Cross College. He was an avid golfer and played for many years until forced to retire for physical reasons. Relatives and friends of the family, officers, Directors and employees of Fifth District Savings Bank, Men of Manresa, Timberlane Country Club, and parishioners of St. Anthony Parish are invited to attend the funeral Mass at Holy Name of Mary Church, Algiers on Monday, July 18, 2011 at 12:00 noon. Visitation in the church from 9:00 AM until Mass time. Interment Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery, Gretna, LA. Masses preferred in lieu of flowers.
