Joseph Scalia, Jr., D.D.S.

Joseph Scalia Jr., DDS, was born on January 26, 1932 and left this Earth on June 25, 2016. He spent his final hours at home, surrounded by his loving family. He is survived by his beloved wife of 64 years, Jessie Langenhennig Scalia, and his children Joseph Scalia III (Lynne), Bert Scalia, Lynnette Klees (John) and Lisa Landesman, DDS (Mark). He is preceded in death by his daughters Julie and Yvette. He is also preceded by his brother Salvador Scalia, and survived by five grandchildren, Jessica Giddens, Sarah Scalia, Joseph Scalia IV, Dominique Scalia, Ian Landesman,, DDS and 4 great-grandchildren. He attended Redemptorist High School and Loyola University, where he graduated with a DDS Degree in 1960. He practiced dentistry in Algiers until he retired in 1992. He was active in his church, Holy Name of Mary, in Algiers Point, where he served as an Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion, until health issues forced him to resign. Among his proudest achievements was gold-leafing the two side altars at his church, in memory of his daughter Yvette. He spent his life passionately committed to his family, striving always to provide for them a good life, and for them to always know deeply and unquestioningly that he loved them. Joe also deeply loved his fellow man, and sought to always extend his hand and open his heart to a neighbor or a passerby in need. He will be remembered fondly by all those who had a chance to know him. The family wishes to express our deepest gratitude for all the love and support of the aides and nurses, and The Heart of Hospice Organization, for their inspiring contribution to Joe’s final days. Visitation will be held at MOTHE FUNERAL HOMES, 1300 Vallette Street, Algiers, LA on Friday, July 1, 2016 from 6 PM to 8 PM. Visitation will resume at Holy Name of Mary Catholic Church in Algiers on Saturday, July 2, 2016 from 9:30 AM to 10:30 AM. A Funeral Mass will follow. Interment will take place at Westlawn Memorial Park in Gretna.
