Leonard John Schexnayder Sr.

March 8, 1926 — January 24, 2016

Leonard John Schexnayder Sr., a resident of Harvey and Gretna, LA, passed
away peacefully at his home surrounded by loved ones on Sunday, January 24, 2016 at
the age of 89. He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Evelyn Hebert Schexnayder.
Beloved father of Jane Soslow (Neil), Lynn Demeure (Anthony), David M.Schexnayder, Sr.,
Lucien B. Schexnayder (Lila Allen), Mary Kass (Greg), and Maria Roussel (Greg), and
father-in-law of Rhonda Lucus Schexnayder.
Grandfather of Annie Kreisman Pirrone (Rigel), Christi Schexnayder Bucci (Mark),
Heather Schexnayder, David Schexnayder Jr., Jacob Schexnayder, Rachel Kass, Gregory Kass, Kristen Kass, George (Geordy) Schexnayder Jr., Lucas Schexnayder, Robert Schexnayder, Gabrielle Roussel, Garrett Roussel and Gavin Roussel;
Great-grandfather of Leah Hindman, Amberly Atkins, Matthew Bucci, Katelyn Bucci, Anthony Bucci and Isabella Bucci.
He is also survived by his loving nieces and nephews, Thomas Johnson, Margaret Grantham, Eric Johnson, Theresa Murdick, Vernon Johnson, and Matthew Johnson, and their families.
Preceded in death by his parents, George B. Schexnayder and Evelyn Montecino
Schexnayder, sons Leonard J. Schexnayder, Jr. and George V. Schexnayder Sr.,
grandchildren Brian Cucullu and Erica Schexnayder, brothers George L. and Aubrey V.
Schexnayder and his nephew Carson Johnson.
Leonard served his country in WWII on the Navy ship USS Sevier in the
Pacific receiving medals from the American Campaign, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign and the World War II Victory. He remained in contact with his shipmates through reunions he originated and organized all over the United States.
He worked as an Appliance Technician for Sears until his retirement.
Leonard was active with GRID, St. Anthony PTA, organizing and performing in
school variety shows with his wife. He continued his service to St. Anthony School participating in activities with his children and grandchildren. He volunteered with the Gould Volunteer Fire Department and participated in Mardi Gras and St. Patrick parades in the Greater New Orleans area aboard his vintage yellow fire truck. In his retirement, he took pride in his garden and being a handyman extraordinaire, always helping his wife and children with various projects. He loved dancing, bowling, traveling, shooting pool and passing a good time with family and friends. Relatives and Friends of the family are invited to attend the Funeral Mass in the chapel of Mothe Funeral Home, 2100 Westbank Expwy., Harvey, LA on Friday, January 29, 2016 at 11am. Visitation will be held on Friday morning from 9am until 11am. Interment will be held at Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery at a later date. The family extends heartfelt gratitude to Serenity Hospice, especially Morva Lee and Chunary Robinson, and to Home Instead Senior Care, especially Keischelle Rhone. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in his memory to St. Anthony Mission Church of St. Joseph in Gretna, LA.
