Loraine Andrew de la Gardelle has crossed the Finish Line of Life on January 30,2013 after living and traveling many furlongs in life, at the age of 89. Leaving the starting gates in Gilbertsville, Iowa on March 2, 1923. The years between those dates contained a lifetime of hard work, accomplishments and love. Known by many by one of his nicknames of Nookie, Steele, Poker Face and Jockey. His loving wife Adeline Percle de la Gardelle, the youngest son of Mable Hertzburg de la Gardelle and Henry John de la Gardelle; his brothers, James de la Gardelle, Gerald de la Gardelle and his sister Marcella de la Gardelle Bourgeois preceded him in death. Survived by his son, Rodney M. de la Gardelle and daughter Lorraine de la Gardelle Jackson. Among several certified professions, in his younger years a professional thoroughbred jockey, riding throughout the country, then later an owner and trainer of thoroughbreds racing in New Orleans. A professional pipe fitter and welder, working offshore rigs in the early 1950’s and many chemical companies and public structures and a member of Plumbers and Steamfitters Local 60 for 55 years. He had many pleasures of life such as dancing, card and slots playing, handicapping horses, political campaigning and his home building and welding fountains, fences and art works in Marrero. Rode in many parades on floats and horseback and created the organization Desert Riders. He served his country and community in the Unites States Army and a volunteer fireman, getting certificates from LSU Firemen Training Program and volunteering for Church functions. Relatives and friends are invited to attend the visitation at MOTHE FUNERAL HOME, 7040 Lapalco Blvd., Marrero, LA on Sunday, February 3, 2013 from 12 Noon until 7PM. Visitation will continue at the funeral home on Monday, February 4, 2013 from 9AM until 11AM. Funeral services will take place at the funeral home on Monday at 11AM.
