Luz Elena Rivera, aged 66, passed away peacefully on Thursday, October 17th, at her home in Harvey, La surrounded by family. “Nena” as she was known by family and “Lucy” as she was known by friends was born August 1958, in Colombia, South America, to Maria L. Freeman and Luis F. Rivera. Though her roots were in Colombia she was proud to spend her adult life as a resident of New Orleans.
Luz’s heart was forever tied to the kitchen, where she poured love into every dish she made. Luz’s career was in culinary and always loved being surrounded by food. Food was in her soul and she loved every moment of it. Whether it was at work, making traditional Colombian meals for her large family or simply indulging herself. Food was life for her and her kitchen was a place of warmth and connection. We always joked that God would one day have the chance to savor her cooking—and now, that time has come.
Beyond her talents in the kitchen, Luz was a woman whose kindness and infectious joy touched everyone who crossed her path. She had a radiant smile and a laugh that could light up even the darkest days. Her second passion was crafting, where her creativity flourished. The holidays were her favorite time of year, and her home transformed with each season. From the spooky joy of Halloween, the magic of Christmas and to the glittering celebrations of Mardi Gras and Easter, Luz’s decorations were a labor of love, crafted to bring happiness to those around her.
Generosity was at the heart of who Luz was. She was deeply committed to giving back to her community, particularly in her hometown of Manizales, Colombia. Some of her charitable contributions included sending shipments filled with clothing and essentials to support the less fortunate, fundraising for local residents, and simply giving from her own pockets. Luz’s spirit of giving was a testament to her loving nature and her belief in lifting others up.
She is survived by her adored daughter Maria Antonieta, her cherished grandson Phillip Carsten, her loving partner George, her devoted parents Maria L. and Luis F., and her caring sisters Maria Lida, Clemencia, Gloria, and Luz Maria. Luz also leaves behind numerous nieces and nephews, each of whom she loved as her own. She is now reunited in Heaven with her dear brother Oscar, a reunion that brings solace to those she leaves behind.
Family, friends, and loved ones are invited to gather and celebrate Luz’s extraordinary life on Wednesday, October 23rd, from 12:30 to 1:30 at Mothe Funeral Home, 2100 Westbank Expressway in Harvey. We will honor a remarkable woman who gave so much of herself to those she loved.
We will miss you, dear “Nena”, “Lucy”, “Mommy”, and love you eternally.
