Lydia Mae Viator Nowell died peacefully in her sleep at her home on Tuesday, November 15, 2016. She was born August 24, 1939 in New Iberia, Louisiana, and she was a longtime resident of Belle Chasse, Louisiana. She was preceded in death by her parents, Addis Paul Viator and Agnes David Viator. She is survived by her loving husband of 37 years, James Mitchell (Mitch) Nowell, Sr., and her seven children, Rocky Paul Laliberte, Sr. (Cathy), Sheila Laliberte Derouen (Raymond, Sr.), Dwayne Mark Laliberte (Kim), Rachel Laliberte Sercovich (Terry), Brent James Laliberte (Kathy), James Mitchell (Mitch) Nowell, Jr. (Betty) and Gary Brian Nowell (Jean). She is also survived by 22 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren, her sisters, Joyce Viator Thompson Sikes (George), Linda Viator Clause, Susan Viator Thibodeaux (Johnny), and her brother, Troy Jude Viator. She fought a courageous battle with lung cancer, but never lost the joy for life, and exemplified what a graceful, peaceful passing should look like. Throughout her entire illness she was determined to remain strong, and to keep a smile on her face, as she convinced the family to be prepared for her passing, when she herself was already at peace. The family would like to thank the entire staff of the Heart of Hospice for their support throughout this difficult time in our lives, and particularly her main caregiver, Ashley Smith, and her aide Lienienka Johnson, who provided for such a beautiful transition. The family also wishes to thank Dr. Robert Kessler and his staff at the West Jefferson Cancer Center for the excellent care and support that she received during the last five years. Visitation will be held on Friday, November 18, 2016 at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church in Belle Chasse, Louisiana, from 10:30 AM until 1 PM, with a Funeral Mass beginning at 1 PM. Interment will follow in the Church Cemetery. In lieu of flowers the family asks that donations be made in her name to the Heart of Hospice, 1700 Belle Chasse Highway, Suite B230, Gretna, LA 70056.
