M. S. "Red" Bird

April 27, 1928 — July 16, 2016

M.S. "Red" Bird, Ret. ADM from MCPO/USCG, and Retired Civil Servant, U.S. Government, joyfully went to be with his Lord and Savior on Saturday, July 16, 2016 at the age of 88 years. Beloved father of Dr. Lisa Bird-Babin. Father-in-law of the late Robert F. Babin I. Grandfather of Kay and Deuce Babin. Son of the late Sam and Albertha Bird. Brother of the late Laverne Bird Bergeron and Lorraine Bird Taravella. Brother-in-law of the late O'Neil J. Bergeron and Carlo J. Taravella. Uncle of 6 nephews, grand nephews, nieces and too many cousins and friends to count. Also survived by Yolanda Cordes, girlfriend of 16 years, and her family, Marvin Thorning, best friend since birth, Coastguard best buddies, CWO Humberto Benabe and family, Civil Services Best Buddies, Jim Montford Sr. and so many others. Preceded in death by the late CWO Samuel Summers, CWO Marvin Portwood and MCPO John Kanaly, Sr. He attended Tulane, graduated from the U.S. Coastguard Academy, and earned his Masters Degree from LSU.
He was a 33rd Degree Mason, Ketchikan Lodge 19, Scottish Rite, Valley of Norwich. He was a member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, Ernest J. Tassin Westwego Senior Center, VFW, American Legion, AARP, NRA, NARFE, and N.O. Jazz Club. A lifelong resident of many military stations in America and worldwide, coming home to the Westbank of New Orleans. Relatives and friends of the family are invited to attend the Memorial Service/Irish Wake at Mothe Funeral Home, 2100 Westbank Expwy., Harvey, LA on Tuesday, August 2, 2016 at 2pm. Visitation will be held from 11am until 2pm. Wear your favorite hat and/or something in his favorite color, green. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, 6700 Westbank Expwy., Marrero, LA or to the Ernest J.
