Margaret Lyons “Margie” Evans, life-long resident of New Orleans, passed away suddenly on Tuesday, August 30, 2011 at the age of 91. She was born February 11, 1920 to the late Mr. and Mrs. Patrick H. Lyons. She was the beloved wife of the late Richard N. Evans, sister of the late Patricia Lyons Harvey, brother of the late Patrick H. Lyons, mother of the late Richard T. Evans, the late Randall L. Evans, the late Captain Russell D. Evans, and grandmother of the late Kettenring Bordes Evans. Mrs. Evans is survived by her daughter Margaret Evans Rueb of Burke, Virginia, her daughter-in-law Bonnie Bordes Evans of New Orleans, Louisiana, her niece Patricia H. Harris of Gretna, Louisiana, and grandchildren Cooper Bordes Evans of Lafayette, Louisiana, Alexander Bordes Evans of Yosemite, California, and G. Richard Rueb of Charlottesville, Virginia.
Mrs. Evans was a founding member of St. Andrew the Apostle Church Parish in Algiers. She had a passion for volunteering as a Friend of the Cabildo and was recognized for her over thirty years of extensive service accumulating many honors. In addition to her inclination for service, Margie was widely considered to be the life of the party. For nearly thirty years Mrs. Evans had a standing reservation at Le Pavillion Hotel for the weekend of Mardi Gras and she felt that, “a parade is not a parade without one beer and one cigarette.” Mrs. Evans was a past president and member for over fifty years of the Aurora Garden Gardens Club.
Visitation will be held at St. Andrew the Apostle Catholic Church 3101 Eton Street, Algiers on Saturday, September 3, 2011 from 10 am to 12 Noon. A Funeral Mass will follow. Interment will take place at Westlawn Memorial Park in Gretna. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to The Friends of the Cabildo, 701 Chartres Street, New Orleans, LA 70116, or visit: www.friendsofthecabildo.org.
