Maury Magill passed away January 16, 2015 at the age of 89. Beloved husband of 54 years to Mary Elizabeth “Betty” Sasada Magill. Father of Keith Magill, Michele Magill Smith, Karen Magill Anderson (Scott) and Jeff Magill (Courtney). Grandfather of Ben and Nathan Smith, Kaitlin Anderson, Caroline, Claire and Catherine Magill. Brother of Dave Magilavy, Leona Sacks, Jack Magilavy and Manny Magilavy. Son of the late Daniel and Ida Belle Kuttner Magilavy. Also survived by many other loving relatives and friends.
He was a member of the Holy Name Society at Christ the King Catholic Church. A native of Akron, Ohio, Magill started work in radio as a teenager in his hometown. Among his first jobs was announcing football games at nearby Massillon High, where the team was coached by future NFL legend Paul Brown. During World War II, Magill served in the Army's 104th Infantry Division as part of a mortar team that saw battle in France, Holland, Belgium and Germany. Magill was part of the WWL broadcast team that covered the Saints throughout their early years, including their first game on Sept. 17, 1967, in Tulane Stadium. Magill retired from regular radio broadcasts in the late 1990s but continued to fill in as a part-time announcer on WWL until 2005, retiring after Hurricane Katrina. Although he was well into his 70s at the time, his dedication and dependability amazed colleagues half his age. He will be sadly missed. In lieu of flowers, MASSES or donations in his memory may be made to the National World War II Museum (www. nationalww2museum.org).
Relatives and friends are invited to the memorial visitation at Christ the King Catholic Church, 535 Deerfield Road in Terrytown on Saturday, January 24, 2015, from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. A Memorial Mass will follow. Private interment will take place at Westlawn Memorial Park. MOTHE FUNERAL HOME is assisting the family during this difficult time.
