Mercedes Lassere Arendt

October 16, 1929 — June 13, 2013

Mercedes Lassere Arendt passed away on June 13, 2013 after a year long battle with liver cancer.

She was a lifelong resident of Algiers, born on October 16, 1929. She attended Holy Name of Mary Catholic Elementary and High School.
She was preceded in death by her parents Benjamin and Olive Pontiff Lassere, her brother Lee, her beloved husband of nearly 61 years Elliott Sr., and an infant son Leon Arendt.

She is survived by her brother Oliver P. Lassere, her sister-in-law Josephine Leonard (Daniel), her daughter Michele Arendt Gonzalez, her five sons Elliott Jr. (Mary), Kenneth (Wendy), Gerard, Paul (Rose), and Benjamin (Andree); 13 grandchildren, 8 great-grandchildren, (number 9 on the way), and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

She was a devout Catholic with a faithful prayer life and a longtime member of the Third Order Franciscan St. Teresa of Avila Fraternity.
She and Elliott Sr. were active parishoners at St. Andrew the Apostle Catholic Church in Algiers, St. Cletus in Gretna, and St. Maurice in the 9th ward. They returned to St. Andrew’s after Hurricane Katrina and attended daily mass for much of their lives.

Mercedes loved to bake and she made beautiful cakes for birthdays, weddings, and other celebrations. She loved babies, butterflies, and bingo. She was the center of our family and will be greatly missed. We know that she is now united with our dad and other loved ones in the glory of heaven.

Memorial contributions may be made in her name to St. Teresa of Avila Fraternity, c/o The Poor Clares, 720 Henry Clay Avenue, New Orleans, La. 70118, or to the charity of your choice.

Our family wishes to thank Hospice Compassus, especially Denise and Jamie, for the loving care they gave our mother in her final days.
We also extend our thanks to her Franciscan sisters and brothers and other friends from St. Andrew’s who visited and prayed for her. Special thanks to Floyd Gegenhiemer for faithfully bringing communion throughout her illness.
