Mercedes Gallinghouse Manieri

September 15, 1917 — July 29, 2011

Mercedes Gallinghouse Manieri, beloved wife for 66 years of Tyrell T. Manieri, Sr. entered into eternal life on July 29, 2011. She is the mother of Deacon Tyrell “Terry” Manieri, Jr. and mother-in-law of Dorothy “Dottie” Bush Manieri; “Granny Dee” to Traci Manieri Vedros (Chris), Shannon Leigh Manieri, and Tyrell “Ty” Manieri, III (Corrie); Great grandmother to Alex, Evan, Jacob, Luke, Julia and Ellis. She was preceded in death by her parents, Edwina Thorning Gallinghouse and William Gallinghouse, her great grandson Alex Michael Vedros, her sisters and brother-in-law Yvonne G. Schmitt (Earl), Gloria G. Peterson (Herbert), and Edwina G. Smith (Karl). She is survived by many cousins, nieces, nephews, friends, and neighbors. Mercedes graduated from Tulane Normal School in education and received a Masters Degree from LSU in library science. She taught and was a librarian for over 33 years in the Orleans Parish School System. She was an avid volunteer and loved being with people. Dee, age 93, was a life-long, devoted member of Mt. Olivet Episcopal Church in Algiers and a member of the American Legion and VFW Auxiliaries, the Louisiana Retired Teachers Association, and Order of the Eastern Star St. John Chapter 35. Her family offers sincere appreciation and gratitude to the staff of Our Lady of Wisdom Healthcare and to Notre Dame Hospice. Relatives and friends of the family are invited to attend the Funeral Service at Mt. Olivet Episcopal Church, 530 Pelican St., New Orleans, LA 70114, on Monday, August 1, 2011 at 2PM. Interment, Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery, Gretna, LA. Visitation at MOTHE FUNERAL HOME, 1300 Vallette St., Algiers, LA on Sunday, July 31, 2011 from 6PM to 8PM and will resume Monday from 11:30AM to 1:30PM. In lieu of flowers, donations to Mt. Olivet Episcopal Church, 530 Pelican St., New Orleans, LA 70114 or to the Alzheimer’s Association, 2605 River Rd., New Orleans, LA 70121, www.alz.org, would be greatly appreciated.
