Nestor Manuel Ponce

Nestor Manuel Ponce passed away peacefully in the early morning hours of February 22, 2023 at Passages Hospice, New Orleans at the age of 90. N. Manuel Ponce was born in Mexico City, Mexico to Adela Gameros and Manuel Ponce on December 21, 1932. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Bonnie Otillar Ponce; his children, Manuel Thomas Ponce and Patricia Ponce Savage; daughter-in-law, Denise Schwark Ponce; Grandsons, Dustin Drake, wife, Sarah Drake, Rayne McBrier and Great Grandson, Levi Drake. N. Manuel Ponce was the patriarch of the Ponce family and oldest of 5 siblings. He first came to New Orleans in the late 1950s to meet his younger sister, Mireya’s future in laws. The Thomassie family embraced him and helped him to get his work Visa and an eventual job at Labiche’s Department Store at Westside Shopping Center as a clothing salesman. There he met his future wife and also earned a legendary reputation for his knowledge and appreciation for fine men’s tailored clothing. In 1974, he opened his own store in the Village Aurora Shopping Mall in Algiers. His customers included notable local politicians such as Edwin Edwards and Saints football coach, Jim Mora. Eventually, he downsized his retail and went strictly into custom clothing by appointment sales. He had undeniable passion and talent and took such pride in fitting all his customers over the years. Golfing was one of his favorite sport pastimes. He also enjoyed horse racing and loved to watch televised boxing matches. In more recent years, his failing health due to Parkinson’s slowed his mobility and ability to continue his craft but he was a salesman to the very end. The Ponce family would like all who knew and loved him to remember his unique charm and sense of humor. He is already so deeply missed.
