Philip Sebastian Grilletta

January 20, 1953 — April 18, 2025

New Orleans

Philip Sebastian Grilletta, age 72, a lifelong resident of New Orleans, passed away in his home on April 18, 2025.

Born on January 20, 1953, Philip was the beloved father of Celena Lingle and her husband Chris, Jacob Grilletta and his wife Elena, and Mariruth Wills and her husband Steven. He was a proud grandfather to Truman Brown and his wife Alondra, Emily Elliott, Joshua Lingle, Austin Grilletta, Caden Grilletta, Shaylynn Grilletta, Mason Grilletta, Nolan Martinez, Jacob Grilletta, Ezekiel Grilletta, Josiah Wills, Abigail Wills, Hannah Wills, Audrey Wills, Charlotte Wills, and Samuel Wills.

He was the son of the late August Sebastian Grilletta and Marie Foret Grilletta. Philip is survived by his siblings Sonia Yeager, James Grilletta, Lori Molinary, and Julie Naughton. He was preceded in death by his brother Jerome Grilletta. He was also preceded in death by his wife and the mother of his children, Marie Pace Grilletta, as well as his longtime partner Susan Drnec, lovingly known as Sue Sue. He is fondly remembered by many nieces and nephews.

Philip worked as a Civil Draftsman, surveying land in Houston, TX and contributing to the planning of the city of New Orleans canals and waterways, with his final contribution being toward the Atchafalaya waterway development. A natural engineer and architect at heart, he was known from a young age for taking apart his toys to understand how they worked. His curious mind never rested—he was a deep thinker, philosopher, and engaging conversationalist who would spend hours reflecting on religion, life, politics, and many other topics.

A lifelong vegetarian and vegan, Philip loved to cook and was known for inventing his own recipes and giving them quirky names like "Hot Tamalli Frito Pie" and his "5 Bean Ragin' Cajun Beans and Rice," which he enjoyed sharing, laughing, and talking about with his loved ones.

Philip had a passion for music and was a frequent attendee of New Orleans music festivals. He played guitar and even built one by hand, a testament to his creativity and craftsmanship.

Though he faced a long struggle with alcoholism, Philip made a courageous decision to give it up in his final year. That time brought clarity, peace, and many meaningful moments with his family. It was a beautiful and treasured chapter of his life that will never be forgotten.

He is also dearly missed by the neighbors and staff at Christopher Inn, where he lived in his later years. Many enjoyed his warm presence and friendly conversations. In a recent moment that reflected his caring nature, Philip reentered the building during a small electrical fire to help others get to safety.

A Celebration of Life will be held Sunday July 20 for those wishing to offer their condolences, details are forthcoming.
