Phyllis Smith Figaro passed away on February 20, 2014 at the age of 74 years. Survivors include her mother, Gladys Aucoin Smith; sister and brother Paula and Chris Smith. She is preceded in death by her son, Jolin Jude Figaro; husband, Joseph Figaro; father Frank Smith and her brother, Frank “Sonny” Smith. Also survived by a host of nieces and nephews.
Phyllis worked for many years for the Archdiocese of New Orleans as principal’s secretary at St. Joseph the Worker School and later as a Medicare biller at Wynhoven Health Care Center. She was the general manager of AAA Contractors in Grand Isle from 1975-1988. Her early years were spent as co-manager of Crown Finance on Canal Street in New Orleans. She was a 1957 graduate of St. Joseph Academy in Bay St. Louis, Mississippi where she was voted “Most Likely to Succeed” and was considered the “backbone” of the alto group in the school choir.
Special thanks and gratitude is extended to Velda Thornton Smith and her family, Galen Smith, Frank Margiotta, Whitney and Peggy Lumas, David Bowers, Linda Andermann, Lois Guiterrez, Alice Hawley and to Dr. Paul Staab and his staff for their love and support throughout Phyllis’ long illness. Her dearest friends and “side-kicks”, as she affectionately called them were Rose McMenamin and Deacon Mel Mart.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend the visitation at St. Joseph the Worker Catholic Church, 455 Ames Blvd in Marrero on Monday, February 24, 2014 from 8 AM to 11 AM.
