Ralph Harel Guy

Ralph Harel Guy, 62, a resident of Harvey, La, passed away on Friday January 25, 2013, at Kindred Hospital in New Orleans, LA after a long battle with Leukemia. He was born on November 11, 1950 in Tylertown, MS to Willie Mae Guy and Albert Robertson. He attended school at Lee’s Chapel Missionary Baptist Church at a young age. He later moved to New Orleans as a young adolescent and attended Booker T. Washington High School. He received his GED in the Navy. In 2012, he received a Military degree from the United States Corps of Engineers. At adult age, he began working for the General Services Administration. He later enlisted into the United States Navy in May 1969 and served in the Vietnam War aboard the U.S.S Kitty Hawk. He was honorably discharged in 1971 and began working for the United States Army Corps of Engineers beginning as porter and driver. He then moved to Harvey Locks and worked as Lock and Dam Operator, Lock and Dam Supervisor, and finally LockMaster, supervising the entire Harvey Lock Operations and Lower Mississippi River region. He also was a licensed as a boat captain and to operate vessels. He served as 2nd Vice President of the Local 1124 National Federation of Federal Employees. He was also certified with the United States Coast Guard. He was a first responder to all natural disasters for the Mississippi Gulf Coast Region and received special commendations for his heroic actions during Hurricanes Katrina and Gustav. He oversaw million dollar renovations of the Harvey Locks to bring it up to current technological operating standards. He received several commendations during his service with the Corps for heroic actions, devoted and years of service, and special acts. He devoted his life and love to the military services and to civilian services of the Corps of Engineers. He retired with 45 years of service with the Corps of Engineers in December 2012. Ralph also enjoyed cooking, fishing, renovating his houses, a conessuier of classic cars, soul & R&B music, Mardi Gras, the Franklinton fair, the casino and most of all spending time with his daughters and granddaughter. Ralph also enjoyed cooking his Thanksgiving day dinner and having his yearly Valentine’s day dinner with his girls. Ralph leaves to cherish his memories three beloved daughters: TamaniDemetris Guy (Metairie, LA), TeliaMijuan Guy (Harvey, LA), and TekewahNaji Guy (Metairie, LA), their mother Linder M Smith, and one granddaughter, Amyrie Monique Brown (Metairie, LA). Thirteen Sisters Clora Jean Dillon and Betty Jean Robertson (Hackely, LA), Auguzine (Charles) Walton (New Orleans, LA), Elma Lee (Angelo) Cokley, Pilot Mtn, NC, Lynell Guy (Los Angeles, CA), Arleatha (Lenell) Lee of Foxworth, MS, Cathrine (Elder Leon) Dillon, Alberta (Michael) Dillon, Wanda (William) Patten, Patty Cotton, Janice Brumfield, Mary Richardson, and Amelia (Wayne) Cypkihn of Hackley, LA; Seven Brothers, Benny James (Laura) Guy of Harvey, LA, Alton Ray (Bobbie) Guy and Ray Charles Guy of Tylertown, MS, Jerry Lynn Guy of Marietta, GA, Alonzo Robertson of Tylertown, MS, Clifton (Mary) Robertson and Albert Leon Robertson of Hackley, LA and a host of nephews, nieces, other relatives, neighbors, co-workers, and friends. Preceded in death by his parents, grandparents, four sisters, four brothers, one niece, and three nephews. Visitation Services at Mothe Funeral Home 6pm-9pm, 7040 Lapalco Blvd., Marrero, LA on Friday February 1, 2013. Funeral Services to be held at Mothe Funeral Home at 11AM officiated by Rev. Dr Lionel Davis. Burial Interment at Garden of Memories Cemetery, Airline Highway at Transcontintal Drive, Metairie, LA.
