Rene Charles Azcona of New Orleans died of cancer on Saturday, January 28, 2012, at the age of 57. He spent his final months at home, cared for by family and friends, and he maintained his sense of humor until the very end.
Rene was a racecar driver in his youth, participating in SCCA and IMSA races throughout the 1980s. He founded Mardi Gras Racing in 1988, and served as the U.S. coordinator for the TransAmazon Adventure Rally. Before falling ill last year, he was the manager of Broussards French Quarter Restaurant.
Rene was preceded in death by his parents, Lloyd Francis Azcona and Renee Moses Azcona. He is survived by his brother, Lloyd Francis Azcona, Jr., his nephews Brian Lloyd Azcona and Matthew Louis Azcona, and his niece, Alaine Azcona Woodford. Rene was the proud great-uncle of John Patrick Woodford, with whom he shared his love of cars.
