Russell Wilbert Gill, a devoted husband, loving grandfather and great-grandfather, passed away on July 11, 2024, surrounded by his beloved family. Russell was 82 years old.
Born on December 31, 1941 in Franklin County Mississippi to Claude Felix Gill and Naida Westbrook Gill, Russell grew up embodying the values of faith, family, and community. He was preceded in death by his parents; his son, Rusty Gill; his brother, Benton Gill; sister-in-law, Allie Louise Gill; and brother-in-law, Don Moulder. Throughout his life, Russell exemplified the love of Christ, serving his community as a deacon at First Baptist Avondale for over 50 years.
He was also a chemical supervisor and worked for many companies over the years, mentoring those around him. He was an avid gardener, sharing the harvests with neighbors and friends. Russell's steadfast faith and dedication to his family and community was inspiration to all who knew him.
Russell leaves behind a loving and cherished family, including his wife of 62 years, Jo Ann Porter Gill, who was his lifelong partner and best friend. His loving children, Teresa Wreyford (Jeff) and Deborah Gill. His surviving siblings are Naida Jo Moulder, Relda Freeman, Claudette Holden (Jimmy), and Nancy Calcote (John).
He was a proud grandfather to 11 grandchildren: Jennifer Delvalle (Troy), Janie Gill, Christopher Gill, Elizabeth Woodham, Chelsea Burt (Mitchell), Bethany Scott, Kiersten Scott, Blake Wreyford, Stewart Wreyford (Nikki), and Katie Brenner (Collyn). Russell also delighted in his 19 great-grandchildren, whose laughter and love brought him immense joy.
Russell's life was a testament to his faith in Jesus, his love for his family, and his dedication to his community. He will be remembered for his kind heart, his humble and generous spirit, and his commitment to living a life of service.
A service to celebrate Russell's life will be held at First Baptist Avondale, where he dedicated so much of his time and love. Family and friends are invited to attend the Visitation at First Baptist Church Avondale, 360 South Jamie Blvd., Avondale, Louisiana on Wednesday, July 17, 2024 from 9AM until 10AM. Funeral Services will be held at the church at 10AM on Wednesday. Graveside Services will be held at Concord Baptist Church Cemetery, 7175 Bogue Chitto Road, McCall, Mississippi 39647 at 3PM.
