Sally Mary Delaney Sampey, 77, a native of Cottonport in Avoyelles Parish and a resident of Belle Chasse in Plaquemine Parish for 48 years, passed away on October 20, 2015 at her home in Belle Chasse surrounded by her loving family.
Mrs. Sampey is survived by her loving husband of 59 years, Rudy Sampey; sons Keith (Celeste), Kevin and Kyle Sampey; grandchildren Joshua Sampey (Bryna), Marc Sampey ( Jasmine ), Melissa Dugas (J.C.), and Erica and Erin Sampey; and great grandchildren Maia, River, Marek, Michael, Amelia, and Thatcher; brothers Ory, Philip, Frank and Joseph Delaney and many other loving relatives and friends. She is preceded in death by her parents Allen and Florence Delaney and brothers J.D. and Lurry Delaney.
Mrs. Sampey, a member of the Belle Chasse Volunteer Fire Department Auxiliary since 1982 and its president for 17 years and to the time of her death, was admired for her many civic-minded contributions to the entire region.
A member of the Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church Parish in Belle Chasse and its Bereavement Committee, Mrs. Sampey’s dedication to the community, especially during time of need, was known to many.
A life-member of the Auxiliary to West Jefferson Medical Center and an Auxilian for more than a decade, Mrs. Sampey’s contributions to the medical organization were numerous. Recently, she was honored for her more than 15,000 hours of service to the Auxiliary. Mrs. Sampey was recognized with her husband, Rudy Sampey, for dedicated service to the region during and following Hurricane Katrina.
As the Hospital Auxiliary’s First Vice-President for several years, Mrs. Sampey was the Auxiliary’s Fundraising Chairwoman. In this role, she helped her fellow volunteers in presenting quarterly fundraising events and raising tens of thousands of dollars to support West Jefferson Medical Center’s Mission. Her most recent fundraiser, which she organized, was in progress during her recent illness.
As a member of the Auxiliary Board of Directors, Mrs. Sampey participated in the annual Louisiana Hospital Association training program for hospital Auxilians and volunteer services in Baton Rouge as a delegate for the Board of the Hospital Auxiliary.
In addition to her service with the Hospital Auxiliary and its Board, Mrs. Sampey Co-chaired the West Jefferson Medical Center Junior Volunteers Program for area high school students, which is supported by the Auxiliary. In this capacity, Mrs. Sampey assisted hundreds of youth volunteers to become acquainted with health careers and to earn community service hours. Mrs. Sampey served on the Auxiliary’s Junior Volunteer Scholarship Committee which in the last decade joined the Auxiliary in awarding more than $58,000 in college scholarships for education in medical, nursing and allied health careers. It was a special joy of Mrs. Sampey to visit with doctors, nurses and other health care workers who had volunteered in the hospital setting or shadowed medical professionals prior to entering various health specialties. Many former junior volunteers would stop by her door in the hospital to share their aspirations and their progress in their career paths.
Mrs. Sampey was also a dedicated volunteer for the community relations programs of the Medical Center and the West Jefferson Hospital Foundation. She generously donated her time to raise money and awareness for women’s cancer and cardiac programs and services. Last spring, Mrs. Sampey organized and led fellow volunteers in providing tours for more than 1,400 persons going thru the WJMC Cancer Center’s huge inflatable colon exhibit on display at the Jefferson Parish Senior Expo. Mrs. Sampey frequently served on breast cancer month committees during October and volunteered for special events year-round to bring greater awareness to women and cardiovascular disease. An avid homemaker and baker, Mrs. Sampey often shared her cookie recipes with family, friends and fellow volunteers as well as hospital staff and helped in the production of cookbooks and recipe distributions for the Hospital Auxiliary.
An avid reader, Mrs. Sampey was a frequent visitor to the Hospital Auxiliary’s Thursday book donation days where fellow volunteers raised money and fostered friendship for the Auxiliary.
A member of the Red Hat Society “Jazzy Belles” for 10 years, Mrs. Sampey enjoyed the society events and good times had with fellow members.
