Savare J. Defelice,, Sr.

August 16, 1923 — July 25, 2016

Savare J. DeFelice Sr. passed away peacefully in his sleep on July 25, 2016 at the age of 92 years. Born in Cut Off, LA on August 16, 1923. Beloved husband of the late Virginia Radosta DeFelice. Father of Savare J. “Sandy” DeFelice Jr. (Arleen), Esteff “Bob” DeFelice (Cathy), Mark DeFelice, Ginny DeFelice and the late Mary Frances DeFelice. Grandfather of Dr. Tre’ DeFelice (Kelly), David DeFelice, Esteff DeFelice Jr., Thomas DeFelice, Elizabeth DeFelice, Dana DeFelice, Rachel DeFelice and Marci DeFelice. Great-grandfather of Brooks and Kate DeFelice and soon due Pascal DeFelice. He was preceded in his death by all of his siblings, Vi Kilgen, Steve DeFelice, Lloyd DeFelice, Luke DeFelice, Thelma Lewis and Daisy Duvigneaud. Son of the late Esteff S. DeFelice and Elmire Galjour DeFelice. Also survived by his many loving nieces, nephews and friends.
Savare served his country in the U.S. Army during World War II, serving in both the European and Asiatic-Pacific Theaters. He later graduated from Tulane University with his Bachelor’s degree in Liberal Arts. As an astute businessman and entrepreneur, he was active and associated with several business ventures including Pascal Manale’s Restaurant, DeFelice Marine Contractors, DeFelice Towing, Myrtle Grove Packing and was especially proud of his first job at Higgins Marine, home of the famed Higgins Boat (LCVP). He served his community as a member and past-president of Belle Chasse Lions Club, member of Knights of Columbus Council #6357, Belle Chasse Rotary, National Rifle Association and Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church where he was an usher in his younger days. He enjoyed spending his free time with his loving children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He loved working in his woodshed, hunting alligators and watching the Saints play on Sundays.
The family would like to extend their gratitude to his “sidekick” and dear friend, Melvin “Nunu” Smith, his caregivers, Harold Wilson, Peggy Wilson and Chaning Concepcion. Your love, compassion and devotion will never be forgotten. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to OLPH Church Belle Chasse, The National World War II Museum or a charity of your choice in Savare DeFelice’s memory.
Relatives, friends of the family, employees of Pascal’s Manale Restaurant are invited to attend the visitation at MOTHE FUNERAL HOMES, 2100 Westbank Expy., Harvey, LA on Sunday, July 31, 2016 from 5 PM to 8 PM and will resume at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church, 8968 Highway 23 in Belle Chasse on Monday, August 1, 2016 from 9 AM to 11 AM. A Funeral Mass will follow. Interment Cypress Grove Cemetery, corner of Canal Street and City Park Avenue in New Orleans.
