Shirley P. Nicholson

June 21, 1940 — October 16, 2024

Shirley P. Nicholson, affectionately known as Nanny, left this world on October 16, 2024, at the West Jefferson Medical Center, leaving behind a legacy of love and kindness that will be cherished forever. Born on June 21, 1940, in Laurel, Mississippi, Shirley lived a life filled with faith, family, and a deep commitment to those around her.

As a devoted homemaker and loving wife to the late Ira Ford Nicholson Sr. affectionately known as “Pop”.  Shirley exemplified what it meant to be a nurturing presence in the lives of her loved ones. Her unwavering spirit and supportive nature made her a beacon of light for her family and friends. Shirley worked diligently as a Head Teller at First National Bank USA, a role that showcased her dedication and integrity. However, it was in her home and her community that her true calling shone brightly.

Shirley was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and friend beloved by all who knew her. She was, without a doubt, a child of God and a homemaker. She enjoyed reading and crocheting, making an extensive collection of each. Her love for God and people was inspirational, and her supportive nature was unmatched. From watching the ball games to having Bible studies, Nana/Nanny always made time to support her family and lead them on the right path. She would bring people together with her cheerful spirit and delicious cooking, especially her pies and pound cake. Her unconditional love and spirit for God will live on in the friends and family she has known and nurtured.

Shirley is survived by her cherished children and grandchildren: Bo Nicholson (the late Sheila), Hope Kirby (Jason), and Holly Dominguez (Jose). Her grandchildren, Logan Nicholson (Victoria), Tyler Koelling (Candace), Jordan Nicholson (Katie), Julien Dominguez, and Halle Dominguez, Madison Kirby, Grant Kirby - along with her great-grandchildren — Eva Grace, Tanner Grace, Grey Smith, Parker Kate, Bennett James, Lawson Ford, Teagan Saige, and Reese — will carry her memory forward with love and gratitude.

She is also survived by her sibling Bobby Pitts (the late Patricia), while her beloved brother Jim Pitts (the late Janet) preceded her in death.

We would like to give a special thanks to her “angel” care giver Tracie Stevenson who became a daughter to both our mom and dad. She joined our family and exemplifies the true meaning of Christ. Her unconditional love and sweet demeanor, always brought joy to them on each visit. Mom especially loved her reading the Bible and singing songs of praise when she needed comforting. Our family will forever be grateful to have her as one of our own.

Nanny was undeniably a child of God, whose faith touched the lives of everyone she encountered. Her love for God and her people was inspirational and enduring, and although she may have departed from our sight, her spirit, kindness, and love will forever live on in the hearts of her family and friends. Nanny, your legacy of love will illuminate our path as we strive to honor you each day.
