Velma Becnel Schexnayder

Velma Becnel Schexnayder passed away on Sunday, January 12, 2014 at the Covenant Home at the age of 89. She was born in New Orleans, LA and was a lifelong resident of Gretna, LA before moving to Metairie. She was an active member of St. Anthony Church, The Lions Club Auxiliary, The Parkinson’s Caretakers Group, and was an avid golfer at Bayou Barriere, Timberlane, and Stonebridge Golf Clubs.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Elodie Falgoust Becnel, and Joseph Peter Becnel, Sr. She was the beloved wife of sixty years to the late Hubert James Schexnayder. She is survived by two children, James Joseph Schexnayder and Linda Schexnayder Carr and their spouses Diana Juliff Schexnayder and John Edward Carr, Jr. Mrs. Schexnayder was the sister of the late Joseph Peter Becnel, Jr and O’Neil Joseph Becnel, Sr. She is survived by three siblings, Paul Becnel, Sr., Helen Becnel Brookman and Louise Becnel Stute. She will be sadly missed by her grandchildren, Christine Carr Gernard (Ryan), Casey Carr Brechtel (Kyle) and John E. Carr III and her great grandchildren, Aiden and Allie Gernard and Charlotte Brechtel.
Relatives and friends of the family are invited to attend a Memorial Mass at Mothe Funeral Homes, 2100 Westbank Expressway, Harvey, LA on Saturday, January 18, 2014 at 11:00 am. Visitation from 9:00 am until funeral time. A private burial take place at Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery at a later date.
We thank her wonderful caregivers, Debbie and Sheila, Lydia and Mary. The family also appreciates the excellent care given by the staff at the Covenant Home who made her last years comfortable.
