Velma Bouvier Stauter, a beloved figure in the hearts of many, passed away peacefully at her home in Marrero, Louisiana, on March 2, 2025, just shy of her 94th birthday. Born on September 3, 1931, in Westwego, Louisiana, Velma lived a life filled with love, laughter, and countless cherished memories.
A dedicated professional, she retired from the Jefferson Parish School Board and also worked as an employee of Celotex. Her commitment to her career was only matched by her devotion to her family and community. Velma was a proud member of the Alter Society at Immaculate Conception Church, where she actively contributed to her faith community and formed lasting friendships.
Velma's interests were as vibrant as her personality. She enjoyed line dancing and treasured her time spent at the Senior Center. Those who knew her will fondly remember her love for fishing at the camp in Bayou Segnette and her delight in traveling to the musical heart of Nashville, Tennessee, and the scenic beauty of Branson, Missouri.
She is survived by her daughter, Jean Fonseca (Poochie); her three beloved grandchildren, Niomi Roussel (Audie), Maranda Kali, Shannon Poche and Amber Fonseca; her great-grandchildren, Lindsey and Collin Roussel, along with Breanna Plaisance; and her great-great-grandchild, Kohen Seiffert. Velma’s family was her pride and joy, and she relished every moment spent with her loved ones.
Her passing leaves a profound void, particularly among those who had the privilege of caring for her during her final days. A heartfelt thanks is extended to the staff of Heart of Hospice and her dedicated caretakers, Donna and Jackie and Maranda. Special acknowledgment is also given to her nieces and nephews for their unwavering love and support during this time.
Velma is preceded in death by her cherished husband of 62 years, Raymond Stauter; her parents, Alice Gros Bouvier and Morris Bouvier; her daughter Reva Poche; as well as her siblings, Horace Bouvier, Irene Matherne, Earl Bouvier, Alice Boudreaux (Jerry), and Shirley Dupre. Each of these individuals played a significant role in her life, and their memory will forever be intertwined with her legacy.
A visitation will be held on March 10, 2025, starting at 10AM at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, located at 4401 7th St, Marrero, LA. Following the visitation, a mass will commence at 12PM, leading to her burial immediately following at Westlawn Memorial Park in Gretna.
