William J Fitzgerald Jr, better known as Bubba, was born in New Orleans, LA on September 23, 1930, and went home to be with the Lord on October 19, 2024, at the age of 94 surrounded by his family. He has been a resident of Gretna, LA for the past 64 years.
He was the beloved husband of the late Elverda R Fitzgerald for 50 years. He is the son of the late William J Fitzgerald Sr. and the late Jane E (Lee) Fitzgerald. Loving father of William J Fitzgerald and step father of Ronald, Ellis and Gerald Verdun, and Jane Barrios. Loving grandfather of Heidi Cuevas (Josh), Aaron Fitzgerald (Jessica), the late Nathan Fitzgerald, and Adam Fitzgerald (Kassidy).
Step grandfather of Chris, Jesse, and Eric Verdun, Sherry, Theresa, Rhonda, and Mandy Barrios. Great grandfather of Jonathan, Kiley, Cody, Logan, Madelyn, and Landon Cuevas, Macie and Gage Fitzgerald, Tristan and Natalie Fitzgerald, step grandfather of Colby and Blake Verdun, Jeremy David, Donald Evans, Gabriel Barrios, and Isabela Barrios. He is also survived by his sister Joan Kerlec. Proceeding him in death were his beloved wife, parents, 7 siblings, and a grandson.
William was a member of The Church of Abundant Life and also the IAM (machinist union). As part of the 101st airborne, he represented his country in both World War ll and the Korean War where he was recognized with a Purple Heart. William later retired after 30 years at Boland Marine. He previously worked at Buck Kreihs Marine Repair, and as a market manager at Schwegmann and Winn-Dixie grocery stores. He loved spending time with all his grandchildren and great grandchildren, as well as gardening, grocery shopping, and working on remodeling projects and construction.
His funeral services will be held on Saturday, November 2nd The Church of Abundant Life, 2301 Par 3 Dr, Harvey, LA. Visitation will be held from 9:30 am to 11:00 am, and the funeral service will begin at 11:00 am. Interment will be private.
