Capt. William Abraham Mayberry

Capt. William Abraham Mayberry passed away on Sunday, July 15, 2012. Born October 30, 1923 in Philadelphia, PA., to the late Agnes Klein Mayberry and Thomas Oliver Mayberry. Beloved husband of Alice Owens Mayberry for 65 years. Father of Patricia Ann Mayberry Andrews, Janet Ellen Mayberry and Nancy Elizabeth Mayberry. Grandfather of Riley Edward Andrews.
Capt. Mayberry was a graduate of the Pennsylvania Maritime Academy. He served with Socony Vacuum Oil Corp. as Master, Loading and Discharge Master, Ship Construction and Repair Inspector and Master of Inland and Harbor Towing.

He then served in the United States Coast Guard as Executive Officer and Acting Commanding Officer on Coast Guard vessels in both North Atlantic and Pacific Station Patrols, Search and Rescue and Ice Station Patrols, Marine Safety, and Port and Waterways Safety. He was Senior Investigating Officer and Senior Resident Shipyard Inspector (N.Y., PA.), and Commanding Officer/Marine Safety Office, and Capt. of the Port in Corpus Christi, TX and in New Orleans, LA. He was also Commanding Officer, Merchant Marine Detail, in Rotterdam, Netherlands, serving as an advisor to the US Ambassador, Den Hague.

Capt. Mayberry was awarded the National Defense Service Medal, the Coast Guard Commendation Medal, the Korean Service Medal, the Merchant Marine WWII Victory Medal, The Veteran's Honor Medal/State of Louisiana, and the United Nations Service Medal.

After retirement Capt. Mayberry served as a Management Advisor on the US and Panamanian Government Delegations to the International Maritime Organization (IMO), in London. He served as President of the Offshore Marine Service Association (OMSA), New Orleans, in policy matters concerning legislative regulations and policy matters involving Congress, the Environmental Protection Agency, the Mineral Management Service and OSHA.

Capt. Mayberry was a member of the Council of Master Mariners, the Retired Officers' Association, the Armed Forces Relief and Benefit Association, the Navy Mutual Aid Association and an Associate Member of the US Naval Institute.

Capt. Mayberry loved travel and music and sang baritone in the Algiers United
Methodist Church choir.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend the visitation at MOTHE FUNERAL HOMES, 1300 Vallette Street, Algiers, LA on Wednesday, July 18, 2012 from 5 PM to 7 PM. Religious services will be held for 7 PM by Rev. Becky Conner. He will be interred with full Military Honors at Biloxi National Cemetery on Thursday, July 19, 2012 at 11 AM.
