Ynette "Lila" Amaro

March 7, 1934 — October 15, 2024

Gretna

Ynette "Lila" Amaro, a beloved educator and cherished mother, passed away peacefully in her home in Gretna Louisiana, on October 15, 2024, surrounded by the love of her daughters and grandchildren. Born on March 7, 1934, in Guines, Cuba, Lila’s journey was one marked by resilience and a deep commitment to family and education.

Lila emigrated to the United States in 1961, embarking on a new life in Louisiana with her husband, Jose E. Amaro. This monumental transition not only shaped her future but enriched the lives of countless immigrant children through her dedicated work teaching English as a Second Language in the Jefferson Parish School System. Her kind and welcoming nature allowed her to never meet a stranger, and she could inspire others with her enormous heart and selfless demeanor.

Her legacy extends beyond her career. Lila was known for her infectious love for life and an unwavering dedication to her family. She found joy in spending time at her second home in Destin, Florida, where she would often be seen reading her favorite historical romance novels while enjoying the laughter of her grandchildren playing at the beach. Facetime was her cherished tool, allowing her to remain connected with her daughters and grandchildren, sharing in their joys and milestones, even from afar.

Her family recalls fond memories of their travels together, exploring various locations that made cherished experiences and lifelong memories. Lila had a special knack for selecting just the right gifts for the people she loved, a reflection of her thoughtfulness and generous spirit.

She leaves behind her loving daughters, Mercedes Hodge and Emily Bergeron, and her son-in-law, Joey Bergeron. Lila was the proud grandmother of Alana Hodge, Jonny Hodge (married to Cory Pittman), Gabriella Bergeron, and Isabelle Bergeron, who will carry her warm spirit in their hearts forever.

Lila is preceded in death by her treasured husband, Jose E. Amaro, her father, Manuel Carabeo, her mother, Maria Luisa Chao, and three beloved sisters, Migdalia Pernia, China Gutierrez, and Yvis Insua.

A visitation to honor her remarkable life will take place on December 7, 2024, from 9:00 AM to 10:30 AM, followed by a funeral service at 10:30 AM at Harvey - Mothe Funeral Homes, LLC, located at 2100 Westbank Expy, Harvey, LA 70058.

As we remember Lila, we celebrate the profound impact she had on her family, her students, and all whose lives she touched. Her legacy of kindness, generosity, and love will forever remain in the hearts of those who knew her. May she rest in eternal peace, surrounded by the love she so freely shared.
